Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about how ClauseCheck works.

What is ClauseCheck?+

A browser-based contract scanner for freelancers and small businesses. Scan SOWs, MSAs, NDAs, and more — it flags risky clauses with plain-English explanations and suggested redlines. Use it on any device with a browser. Chrome extension is live now (with right-click scanning from Gmail, Google Docs, and any web page). Edge coming soon.

Is this legal advice?+

No. ClauseCheck is an automated tool. Its output is informational only and is not a substitute for a licensed attorney. The AI may be wrong, incomplete, or inappropriate for your specific situation and jurisdiction. For material contracts, always consult a qualified lawyer.

Does my contract leave my device?+

Your uploaded file never does. When you upload a PDF or DOCX, it is parsed entirely in your browser using local JavaScript — the raw file is never sent to our servers. Only the extracted plain text is transmitted to our API for scanning. Pasted text is sent directly. We do not store your contract content after the scan completes.

Do you store my contracts?+

No. After scanning, we log only clause categories flagged, token counts, and model cost — never the contract body itself. Your content is not retained after the request completes. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Do you train AI on my contracts?+

No. Your contract text is never used to train any model — ours or anyone else's. Scans are stateless API calls to Anthropic. Per Anthropic's commercial API terms, API inputs and outputs are not used for model training.

What clauses does it catch?+

15 clause categories tuned for freelancers: auto-renewal, IP assignment (including pre-existing IP), unlimited liability, kill fees, scope-creep language, non-compete / non-solicit, arbitration, governing law, NET 60+ payment terms, unclear milestones, moral rights waiver, exclusivity, confidentiality, unilateral termination, and warranty disclaimers.

How accurate is it?+

Our internal eval harness measures F1 = 0.88 (precision 0.82, recall 0.94) across 16 labeled synthetic contracts covering all five role profiles. AI analysis can still miss clauses or flag things incorrectly — treat it as a first pass, not a final answer.

How is it priced?+

Free forever: 5 scans per month, all 15 clause categories, severity ratings. Pro: $3.99/mo or $29/yr — unlimited scans, suggested redlines, PDF export of reports, role-specific scoring, kill fee calculator, benchmark data. Lifetime: $39 one-time, everything in Pro, capped at the first 500 users.

What does Pro include that Free doesn't?+

Unlimited scans (Free is 5/month), suggested redlines per clause (copy-paste replacement language), PDF export of your scan report, role-specific severity scoring (designer / developer / writer / consultant), and anonymous clause benchmark data. Free users still see all flagged clauses and their explanations.

Can I cancel Pro anytime?+

Yes. Cancel from your Account page via the Stripe Customer Portal. You keep Pro access until the end of the current billing period with no charges after that.

What's the difference between Pro and Lifetime?+

Lifetime is a one-time $39 payment that covers all current and future Pro features, forever, with no subscription. It's a launch-only deal capped at 500 users — once those slots are gone, Lifetime is no longer available. Core features (scanning, redlines, role profiles, PDF export, benchmarks) are guaranteed to remain included.

What file formats can I upload?+

PDF (text-based only — scanned / image PDFs are not supported in v1), DOCX (Word), TXT, and Markdown (.md). Max 5 MB per file. Files are parsed client-side in your browser; only the extracted text is sent to our API.

Do I need the Chrome extension?+

No. The web app at clause-check.app/scan works on any browser including Safari and Firefox, on desktop and mobile. The Chrome extension (live now) and Edge extension (coming soon) add right-click scanning directly from Gmail, Google Docs, and any web page — no copy-pasting required. Both use the same backend, limits, and pricing. Get the Chrome extension: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/dmfkeoijggalpdonblfmlkpbhppfmjgj

Which browsers does the extension support?+

Chrome and Edge (MV3 format). The extension should also work on Chromium-based browsers like Brave and Arc, but these are not officially supported. The web app works on any modern browser.

How do I delete my account?+

From your Account page — deletion is immediate and cascades to all usage logs and subscription records. Stripe retains payment receipts per their compliance requirements, but your ClauseCheck account and all associated scan data are gone. You can also email hello@clause-check.app and we'll handle it within 2 business days.

I'm in the EU / UK / California — what are my data rights?+

You have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data at any time. Account deletion from your Account page is immediate and covers all data we hold. For GDPR / CCPA requests or data exports, email hello@clause-check.app — we respond within 30 days.
